Soglin served as Madison’s mayor for a total of 22 years in three different stints between 1973 and 2019. He came to Madison politics by way of anti-Vietnam War activism as a UW-Madison student in the 1960s. He was beaten by police during campus protests against the Dow Chemical Company in 1967 and was elected to the City Council the following year.
