Tyrrell holds a masters degree in cellular and molecular biology from UW–Madison and a degree in zoology from the University of Florida. She was a AAAS Mass Media Science and Engineering Fellow in 2011. In 2019, she won the National Association of Science Writers Excellence in Institutional Writing Award for a storytelling project called Origins.
