Berne has worked for 30 years in higher education, taking over at Madison College in 2025. She began her career as a full-time community college faculty member, teaching English and ESL, and later served as a department chair. She has held senior academic roles at several community colleges, including Harper College, Berkshire Community College and Oakland Community College.
