Prior to The Atlantic, Packer was a staff writer for The New Yorker for 15 years. His 2012 book, “The Unwinding: An Inner History of the New America,” won the National Book Award for Nonfiction. His most recent book, “Last Best Hope: America in Crisis and Renewal,” was released in June.
