First elected in 2016, Van Hollen is the senior U.S. senator for Maryland. He made international headlines in April 2025 when he flew to El Salvador to seek the release of a constituent wrongfully deported to a prison in that country by the Trump administration. Since then, Van Hollen has emerged as one of Capitol Hill’s most outspoken advocates for presidential accountability, new approaches to foreign policy and strategies for reforming the Senate and the Supreme Court. That in turn has inspired talk of a 2028 presidential bid.
