Bird Bear (Mandan, Hidatsa, and Diné) is the inaugural director of tribal relations at the university. He previously supported American Indian and Alaska Native students at the university and also historically underrepresented students as assistant dean of student diversity programs in the School of Education. Bird Bear created wisconsinfirstnations.org to help fulfill state educational statutes.
