Thompson served as governor of Wisconsin from 1986 to 2000, the longest-serving governor in the state’s history. Afterward he led the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush and unsuccesfully ran for president in 2007. More recently, he served as the interim president of the Universities of Wisconsin.
